Brand X Performances

This list is by no means complete, nor error free.  I'm especially sure that I'm missing some 1990's  >  shows.
If you have any corrections, please contact me via the link at the bottom of this page.

More often than not, if song times are listed they are actually track times, not necessarily the true length of the song.

Sources for the information below are listed at the bottom of this page and throughout this site.

I hope you enjoy this site.

"We offered the gig to Bill Bruford, he turned it down because he was playing with Gong at the time *.  He did a couple of rehearsals and decided he didn't want to get into it.  Then Danny Wilding recommended Phil."
  ~ Percy Jones

* Bruford only played w/ Gong in 1974: Nov-Dec, so Bruford's supposed excuse does not make sense, unless Brand X were actually getting together that early.

75-Dec 22:    Marquee Club - London, England

"Brand X debuted at the Marquee Club on the 22nd of December, 1975.  This was the first of six appearances of the jazz rock band at the club between 1975 and 1977.  This was not the first time that some of the members of the band played at the Marquee though.  Jack Lancaster had performed with his former band Blodwyn Pig in 1976, Phil Collins played at the Marquee in numerous occasions with Genesis and he even had worked before sweeping up the club."
~ from Marquee Club records

"I remember the debut of Brand X and oddly enough the Marquee wasn't as packed as one would have expected, but of course now everything is viewed in retrospective and it's hard to believe that a band like Brand X introduced themselves to 300 hundred people.  The set was impressive and the music, despite being heard for the first time, was heavenly.  I guess they played stuff from "Unorthodox Behavior".  Goodsall was fantastic and the drumming of Collins was extraordinary.  Not to mention the bass player, who played on Nova's first album, produced by Pete Townsend "Blink"  (actually "Vimana", their 3rd LP), another act I saw a couple of times at the great Marquee.

A few months later, actually in July I think, I saw again Brand X playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival.  They played a short set in the gardens, not in the big hall.  It was a free concert in the afternoon but Phil Collins was not there."
~ from a fan's memory

Andy Ward of Camel guested on percussion for this night only.  Due to a cramped stage, he twice accidentally knocked his cymbal into Phil's area below, once hitting Phil himself, the other "demolished half his drumkit, and this time the band had to stop playing altogether while things were put right...I was never asked to play with them again."

*   Some sources contain John Peel’s comments  -  these 2 tracks may have been the only ones b'cast?

John Peel session records list two sessions around this time, July-15 + Aug-2, each with the same setlist, Why Should I Lend You Mine + Malaga Virgen.  I find it odd that the band would have done two sessions so close together with the same setlists.  Interestingly, Peel's records do not indicate b'cast dates for either session.  I think that July-15 is the recording date and that 76-Aug-2 was the b'cast date.  Possibly further supporting this theory is that some recordings have commentary from John Peel while others do not.  The commentary may have only been on the b'cast sources.

76-Aug/Sept:    Ronnie Scott's Club - London, England    (Source for some of Livestock)

Brand X played a two week stint at Ronnie Scott's club in 76-Aug/Sept  (possibly 76-Aug-30 - 76-Sept-11).  One theory is that all 3 of the 5 Livestock tracks with Phil were recorded during this period.  Another possibility is that some of these tracks were recorded on 76-Nov-12 and / or 77-Apr-23.

Confirmed source of Isis Mourning *
Possible source of Ish and Euthanasia Waltz

For me, tapes fr their 2 week residence at Ronnie Scott's is Brand X's holy grail

*  I was contacted by Peter Cave and he informed me "I am in contact with Robin Lumley here in Melbourne, Australia.  If you need to 'pick his brain' about old Brand X stuff let me know".  Though I could have come up with several questions (many of them centering around the dates for all Livestock tracks and if they have any unissued recordings from their 76-Aug/Sept stint at Ronnie Scotts), the one I went with was "when/where was Isis Mourning recorded".  Here is Peter's response:

"Hi Scott, I spoke to Robin today and he confirmed that Isis Mourning was recorded at Ronnie Scott's with the Manor Mobile.  Apparently the Livestock record was mixed in one day due to the excellent recording.  Only a couple of guitar parts were replaced (hum + noise problems) and a bass note or two due to lighting interference.  Can't pin down the exact dates however; hope this helps.    Regards, Peter Cave"

Thank you Peter, for helping solve this mystery for me.  It's greatly appreciated.

the 2nd half just drips w/ BX's spacey atmosphere - absolutely classic
source for Missing Period
most likely not from this date

Two sources circulate for this: "Rock Around The World" (LP/SBD, 25m) and a high quality tape source (28m) which does not contain the ROTW introduction that is on the LP source.  This show was broadcast by "Rock Around The World" (Show #122 **) on 76-Dec-5, which unfortunately is the date usually given to it.  That is NOT the performance date.  It's the broadcast date.  Adding additional confusion is the 76-May-12 date sometimes given to it.  This is clearly just a misreading of the broadcast date.  All I know for sure is that this show is listed as being from Ronnie Scott's.  As I think their two week stint in 76-Sept was the only time they played at Ronnie Scott's (at least in 1976), I'm listing this generically as 76-Sept, until more info surfaces (if ever).  Genocide sounds like a BBC performance or studio outtake (fr 76-77) and is probably not from this show.

76-Nov-12:    Hammersmith Odeon - London, England    (Possible source for some of Livestock)

76-Nov-15:    Free Trade Hall - Manchester, England    (opening for Larry Coryell + Tangerine Dream)

"I attended the Brand X show at Manchester Free Trade Hall. I was particularly thrilled as it was the first time that I had managed to get tickets to see any member of Genesis perform live. I purchased a ticket for the circle and as the venue was pretty empty (I'd estimate no more 600 or 700 people in a hall holding 2,000), I was able to take the seat that was almost directly above Phil's drumkit. I was the only person sat in that part of the hall and I think that at times Phil seems a little uneasy with this obsessive fan watching his every move. I remember very little about the music (not being a great fan of jazz-rock), but I did find Phil's performance completely enthralling. Brand X were actually supporting Larry Coryell that evening. I'd never heard of him, but I came away from the show being much more impressed with Larry's music than with the quirky Brand X. The only other thing I recall from the evening was that Anthony Wilson (later head of Factory Records, famous for Joy Division etc) was in the audience with some friends and was quite openly smoking dope - which I found quite shocking as an innocent 16-year old."     ~  Charlie

77-Apr-23:    Marquee Club - London, England    (Possible source for some of Livestock)

I read that some of the Livestock material with Phil was recorded here.  Genesis took a break in their Wind And Wuthering Tour from Apr 4-30, so it is likely that Phil would have joined the band for this show, especially since this is before the summer shows with Dennard.
I would LOVE to have a recording of this show.

Joe Blocker replaces Phil Collins for upcoming tours as Collins is busy touring with Genesis.  After early rehearsals, Blocker is replaced by Kenwood Dennard.

Supporting Stanley Clarke, hence the shorter set.

Phil joined the band on stage for this show as a 2nd percussionist, playing along w/ Morris.  Apparently Phil made his stage entrance somewhat disguised and with a broom, pretending to sweep the floor.  He slowly meandered across the stage, without the crowd knowing who it was.  The audience was laughing at the sight of this unknown guy sweeping the stage during a concert!  That would have been great to see.  (thanks for the info Mark)

There is a dramatic difference in the sound of the 2 shared songs between the tape and Livestock versions.  First off, the tape's SQ leaves a lot to be desired and has Percy lower in the mix.  That being said, listening to Livestock does not give you any idea of the percussion tour de force that is going on.  For example, during Percy's bit during Nightmare (2.15-3.15) the percussion is just relentless, whereas on Livestock it is barely noticable.  To be fair, the percussion really dominates the sound and the producers were right to have toned it down a bit.  Still, it is great to hear.

*  Prior to playing Access To Data, Robin says "In fact we've only heard it twice and one of those was in rehearsal at the soundcheck.  ...and it's called Access To Data."  Besides making the 2nd show on 77-Sept-28 the debut performance of that song, it also calls into question the date of this recording and the venue, as the band played the song on 77-Oct-18, which would mean that 77-Oct-30 could not be the 2nd performance of this song.  So, either Robin is wrong or this is not from 77-Oct-30.  When I got my initial recording of this show from a serious trader in Germany, it was listed as 77-Oct-13 NYC.  At this point, I'm inclined to go with 77-Oct-13, though that is highly questionable.

77-Nov-18:    Livestock LP is released

At this point I'd like to address their live LP - Livestock.  There is much confusion over the date of these tracks.  Some of this comes from the LP versus CD indexing and notes.  The LP keeps Isis Mourning as one track, whereas the CD oddly breaks them into two seamless tracks (probably due to composition credits - note: my disc does not list Isis Mourning as two tracks but it is indexed as two, creating 6 tracks instead of the listed 5).  The LP clearly shows that tracks 1 + 5 (Nightmare Patrol + Malaga Virgen) were played with Kenwood Dennard (1977).  The CDs (those that actually list which tracks Dennard is on, mine does not) seemed to follow the Tracks 1 + 5 logic w/o taking into account the different indexing.  Needless to say, Nightmare Patrol + Malaga Virgen are the Dennard tracks and are from 77-Aug-5.  The remaining 3 tracks, with Phil, are harder to pinpoint.  Of the 3, the only one that is clearly played in front of an audience is Isis Mourning.  I do not hear an audience in Euthanasia Waltz and the one in the beginning of Ish now appears to me to be genuine and from Nightmare Patrol and not from Ish.  However, both Ish + Waltz fade out before the songs end, so they could very well be performed in front of an audience.  It's hard to tell.  I also read on Phil's site that the songs for Livestock are taken from 76-Sept: Ronnie Scott's, 77-Apr(-23): Marquee Club, 77-Aug(-5): Hammersmith and 76-Nov-12: Hammersmith Odeon.  This differs from the Livestock notes, which lacks the 76-Nov-12 date.  I read on George Starostins Music Reviews site that some songs are newly-recorded studio tracks.  This is the only place I heard that some tracks are from studio sessions , so I'm not sure if this is valid.  On the other hand, Livestock states that the 2 Dennard tracks are from both the Marquee and Hammersmith in 77-Aug.  Since both tracks are actually from the Hammersmith show on 77-Aug-5, the notes could be wrong and the third source might be 77-Apr-23 at the Marquee with Phil.  Phil could have easily played the 77-Apr-23 show, as Genesis took a tour break from Apr 4-30.  So, the 3 Phil tracks could be from 76-Sept + 77-Apr-23, not just 76-Sept.  At this point, though, the source of the Phil tracks on Livestock is theory.  All this confusion could be solved if bands and record labels were as concerned about documenting live tracks as collectors are !

Here is how I think the Livestock tracks should be dated:

1   Nightmare Patrol   *
2   Ish
3   Euthanasia Waltz
4   Isis Mourning
5   Malaga Virgen   *

77-Aug-5   (definite)
76-Sept, 77-Apr-23, or a studio recording
76-Sept, 77-Apr-23, or a studio recording
76-Sept   (definite)
77-Aug-5   (definite)

*   Phil joined the band on stage for this show as a 2nd percussionist, playing along w/ Morris.

Though I hope I'm not beating this subject to death (too late you say ?), here are some additional comments I found on the web concerning the source of the Livestock tracks (all are quotes, except for my *** comments ***):

From Phil Collins' Website:
..in 77-Nov a live album, Livestock, was released which featured Phil on 3 of the 5 tracks (recorded at Ronnie Scott's in 76-Sept, Hammersmith Odeon on 76-Nov-12, and the Marquee Club on 77-Apr-23)

From George Starostins Music Reviews:
Some newly-recorded studio tracks are interspersed with some newly-recorded live tracks that date from different venues featuring different drummers, and to make matters even more complicated, the newly recorded tracks in fact date to pre-Moroccan Roll times
*** George says that 'Euthanasia Waltz' is an alternate version (if so, I'd say the same for Ish, in that it is a studio performance) ***

From Camino Records:
This live album released in November '77 features Phil on three of the five tracks Recorded at Ronnie Scott's in 76-Sept, Hammersmith Odeon on 76-Nov-12, and the Marquee Club on 77-Apr-23

(2nd section)

"In the case of Brand X, we all just had a ball together in the year of 1977 !   It was incredible !   The atmosphere was better described as crazy, zany, world class, fun, adolescent, spontaneous, full of camaraderie.   Somehow, friendly just doesn't quite fit !"
~ Kenwood Dennard

Here is a Chris Welch article in the December 17 1977 issue of Melody Maker about Brand X's successful 1977 tour of America.

 Part 1                 Part 2

1978:

Band Lineup:
John Goodsall:
Percy Jones:
Morris Pert:
Peter Robinson:
Chuck Burgi:
Mike Clark:
Mike Miller:
Guitar
Bass
Percussion
Keyboards
Drums
Drums
Guitar
   June - July

   June - Oct
   Oct - Dec
   Late  Aug - Dec

The 1978 tour could have been truly killer had John Goodsall not have to leave the tour so early and if Peter Robinson had not replaced Robin Lumley (nothing against Peter, it's just that he's not Robin). The drummer issue I can deal with, but not the absence of Goodsall (for much of it) and Robin. This tour shows the band stretching out like never before or since, often playing 20-40+ min of uninterupted music.  If the 1977 touring lineup had remained in place for the 1978 shows, it would have been fantastic.  Such was not the case, unfortunately.

As far as I can tell, Chuck Burgi played drums on all 1978 June-Oct_early shows  (N. America and Europe). I have yet to hear Mike Clark being mentioned during the band introductions for this period.  The earliest 1978 recording I have that mentions Mike Clark is 78-Oct-31.   I've read on another BX site that Burgi played all European shows and Clark all N. American shows in 1978.   This is clearly wrong.   Based on what I've heard and read so far, a more likely scenario would be that Burgi played during June-Oct_early and Clark  late_Oct-Dec.   Any additional info would be very much appreciated.

Also playing at this show were:  Jefferson Starship (headliners).  Jefferson Starship's performance was video recorded for the German Rockpalast TV program, but was never aired, do to a severely drunk Grace Slick "taunting the audience about World War II, calling them Nazis, sticking her fingers up audience members' noses, repeatedly giving the "Heil Hitler" salute"  (Jeff Tamarkin).    Grace Slick leaves the band after this show.

I wonder if Rockpalast video recorded any of Brand X's set ?

78-June-24:    Knebworth Park - Knebworth, England   (Saturday)    (Phil appears to have joined the band for 1 or 2 songs *)

* Neil Mawer was at this show and wrote me: "I was at the Knebworth show in 78. Although not overly familiar with Brand X at the time, and to be honest their intricate music was lost in the vast open space of Knebworth, I do recall that they played very early in the day & that Phil Collins joined them for one or two numbers."

Also playing at this show were:  Genesis, Roy Harper (w/ Andy Roberts), Devo, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jefferson Starship

78-July-30:    Morris Stage - Morristown, NJ    (w/ John McLaughlin & The One Truth Band)

Played w/o a guitar player !

"It was an amazing show.  Without a guitarist as the others on this tour were.  Morris Pert was unreal !  I remember his percussion set-up taking up over half the stage and him running around hitting every drum, cymbal, gadget, whatever like a chicken with his head cut off.  Almost forgot there wasn't a guitar player and I love John Goodsall !  Also saw the show at the Tower Theatre on 79-Sept-30  (as well as 78-Oct-30 at The Bottom Line)."     ~  Rick

"I too was at this show.  Somewhere i have the ticket stub.  Being a bassist for me and the guitar player in our band it was a must see concert at the Morris Stage.  They opened for John McLaughlin's One Truth band who were also incredible.  I believe the tickets were like $7 or $8 !  It was a packed house in the small 1200 seat theatre that hot summer night.  John Goodsall did not play but was present.  We saw him walking thru the crowd downstage right to the back stage entrance.  He had a short cast on his left arm.  We had heard rumors of Heroin use by him but we had no way to confirm this.  Morris Pert was a percussion fiend,  He really took their set to a higher level !  (Edensongs:  I agree they were not the same without Pert, or for that matter a percussionist period.  Something was lacking without a percussionist.)

During intermission my friend who at the time sported a pretty good beard and from behind could easily pass for Phil Collins, was tapped on the shoulder by a fan and I'll never forget the exchange: Fan: "Hey are you Phil Collins ?!".  My friend turning with the most serious look on his face, simply said in a fake English accent "No mate" turning away from him.  The fan's face went from sheer joy to overwhelming shock !  He thought it was Phil !!!  I couldn't keep a straight face and lost it !  Then the One Truth band took the stage and we were off in another galaxy, again."

78-Aug-20:    Kåren Club, Stockholm University - Gothenburg, Sweden    (57m:    might be same as 78-Aug-30 ?)

Something about this listing is definitely incorrect.  I think Kåren was/is located in Gothenburg while Stockholm University is clearly in Stockholm.  Is it possible there were two Kåren Clubs?  I've seen it listed as being located in both Stockholm and Gothenburg.  My notes on where I got this info from are long gone, so this is pure conjecture.  Clearly this should either be listed as "Stockholm University - Stockholm, Sweden" or "Kåren Club - Gothenburg, Sweden".  Also adding confusion is the Aug-21 show, which I had listed as being from Gothenburg.  Assuming the Aug-21 info is correct, then they either did two shows in Gothenburg (probably Kåren Club) on two consecutive nights or they played at Stockholm University on Aug-20 and then at Kåren Club on Aug-21.  A third possibility is that they did not in fact play on both Aug-20 and Aug-21, but only one night.  In that case I would go with Kåren Club but not sure which night to pick.

Adding more confusion is that the band released a live recording from Sweden in 1978 called "Live From Stockholm", with the notes saying it was recorded at Karhuset (aka Club Karen), Stockholm, Sweden, 30th March 1978 with Mike Miller.  Clearly the date is wrong, as Miller did not temporarily replace Goodsall until August.  But the date makes me wonder if this real date of the Kåren Club show(s) should be 78-Aug-30, as I do have them listed as playing in Sweden on that date.

In the end there is too much uncertainty about all three possible shows in Sweden in August 1978 for me to be more precise.

"Despite all your Weather Reports, Coreas, Dukes and such, Brand X remain the sum total of British jazz-rock to reach what might reasonably be termed a "wide audience", judging by chart positions.  But even they must feel precarious.  The City Hall attendance was wretched even after the rumoured handout of 500 freebies at local student unions."

fades out
fades in

The date of this recording jumps around a bit, though I know for sure that the often listed date of 79-Sept-28 is incorrect (see below entry).  I was informed by Steve Ruckman that this so-called "Long Island tape" is actually the same as Disc 3 of Brand X's Trilogy release, which is officially dated 79-Sept-27 . Though there is another, different recording also from this date (see above), it would not be uncommon for the band to play two shows at the same venue in one evening. (Thanks for helping to help clear this up Steve).

See the comment for the 79-Sept-26 show(s)

79-Sept-28:    O'Keefe Centre in Toronto, Canada

This date is often listed is as being played in Long Island, NY.  However, Bruce Lawrence contacted me and said he saw them on this day at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto, Canada and had a  ticket stub  to verify it.  Thanks Bruce.

"I was at that concert too, and can give you some more details. The show was announced about a month and a half before the gig and it was also announced that Collins was NOT going to be playing. Being huge X fans regardless, we still waited outside the ticketmaster outlet to get seats. It didn’t matter anyway, because NOBODY was buying because of the Phil thing. We bought anyway and got dead center second row in a 3000 seat concert hall. Three weeks later Phil was announced and tickets were gone in 30 sec."     ~  Colin

79-Sept-29:    Tower Theater - Philadelphia, PA

Here is a scan of a  ticket and backstage pass  for this show.

79-Sept-30 ?:    Tower Theater - Philadelphia, PA         (80min)   this may be from Sept 29

1   Disco Suicide > Algon
2   Dance Of The Illegal Aliens

4   ...And So To F
5   Nuclear Burn

There appears to be some uncertainty regarding whether they played at Tower Theater on Sept 30.   Sept 29 is confirmed, but not Sept 30.   As a result, the above recording may actually be misdated and is actually from Sept 29.

Here  is an article on Brand X and interviews with Goodsall + Percy from the August 1980 issue of Guitar Player.  Unfortunately, by the time the issue hit the stands, Brand X had effectively ceased to exist.  (thanks to Mark Kenyon for supplying this and many other artifacts)

1981:

???   81-Sept 9-12:    Secret Policeman's Other Ball, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane - London England   ???

This seems highly questionable to me.  I know that Phil participated in this event, but I find it hard to believe that Brand X was on the bill as well.  If anyone has any additional info, please let me know.

1982:

82-March-29:    Måndagsbörsen TV Show, Hamburger Börs - Stockholm, Sweden    (Brand X  lite !)

1   Dance Of The Illegal Aliens

Phil was in town to produce Frida Lyngstad's (Abba) Something's Going On album and appeared on the Måndagsbörsen music show, along with Peter Robinson.  The 2 hosts separately interview Phil & Peter (in English and then translate to Swedish for the audience).  At the end, Peter says they are going to play a Brand X tune called Dance Of The Illegal Aliens.  According to Christian, who saw this when it originally aired, Phil may have played In The Air Tonight, but is unsure.  Also, Phil's percussion contribution may have been limited to vibra-slap and tambourine.  You can see the  Mandagsborsen interview  if you are interested.

This really isn't Brand X.  Rather two former members getting together with some other guys to play a Brand X tune.  This date was a mystery for a while and we now finally know what it actually was all about.  Here is the band lineup.

Band Lineup:
Phil Collins:

I was there !

A 76min video exists of this show, recorded so close to the stage (the taper could probably touch Percy), the band HAD to have known this was being recorded.

This show definitely has a warm-up gig feel to it, further supporting that it was the first show of the re-formed Brand X

A 57min recording of this same performance exists, in superior SQ.  However, though the total recording time is 72min, the last 14min is actually a repeat of earlier tracks.  Though this is definitely from the first show, this may be the same 71min recording that is circulating as being from the 2nd show (possibly that recording is misdated and may suffer from the same repeating of tracks, causing it to really only be 57min long.  This is just a theory.  Anyway, here's the setlist for that recording:

97-May-14:    Jazz Cafe - London, England

"The crowds in Japan were very good.  England was horrendous.  We were there for like three weeks or something.  The first gig was at the Jazz Cafe in London, a nice venue.  It was great, the place was full up, or almost full.  I was feeling really happy, you know, people are coming, this is going to be fun.  It's always better when people show up (laughs).  The next night we played in Oxford, and the promoter wanted to pull the gig.  He said they hadn't sold any tickets.  So anyway, we talked him into not pulling the gig, so we played and there was hardly anybody there.  All the subsequent gigs, like Manchester, Leeds, Bristol...  there were like 50 people max.  I hadn't played in England for 20 years so it was pretty disappointing, to go back to your home turf and nobody's interested.  Then we did some gigs in Italy, Switzerland and Germany and things were OK again, decent turnouts."

"My recollection is that Sheffield was a good performance (minus the sound problems), or at least a good time and adventure for all of us. I liked the keyboard I was playing in England. I borrowed it from Malcolm Bruce, Jack Bruce's son. Didn't have that keyboard in Italy, Germany or Switzerland. A side story: one of the lenses to my glasses popped out of its frame while I was setting up there. It proceeded to slide across the stage floor and down through a crack to the depths of under the stage. I spent the next 20 minutes crawling around in the muck of the underside of the Leadmill stage with a flashlight looking for it, using every 4 letter word I could think of. I found it, took a shower, then we played. Weird how that is a fond memory that cracks me up. Hey how many people have seen the underside of the Leadmill stage?"

Miscellaneous Info:

"I'm not a lover of City Life because I grew up on a farm.  I deal with New York City since I want to continue playing bass, and under the present circumstances this is the only way I can do it.  I do miss the countryside in Wales, which is where I grew up, but I go there every year and spend 4 to 6 weeks there.  The space is really appreciated, if I didn't get that I would probably crack up."

Percy Jones:   2003-January

Mike V:
Why and when did you leave England?  Why did you pick New York as the place to go to?

Percy:
Two reasons really, my wife is a native New Yorker and at the time I was playing more over here than I was in the UK, so it simply made sense to live here.  Also New York is such a diverse place racially, and of course musically, so I thought I could probably learn a lot by being here.

2003-March

Much of the above information was gathered through my own research.  I did, however, get some additional info from:

  • Chris H.   (a past trader fr Germany w/ an amazing list of recordings fr an amazing list of bands  -  his list was very helpful)
  • Aymeric Leroy   (knower of all things  Canterbury)
  • Michael McAllister, aka Jody  (runs Percy Jones' site)
  • Christian Isendahl   (help w/ the 1982 show)
  • Mark Kenyon   (providing me with a large amount of wonderful bits of obscure information + scans)
  • Robert Pfeifer
  • Chris Leet   (for providing me with scans of some very interesting things)
  • A LOT of very cool people that have kindly given me additional information along the way
