Camel Performances

This list is by no means complete, nor error free.  If you have any corrections, please contact me via the link at the bottom of this page.

More often than not, if song times are listed they are actually track times, not necessarily the true length of the song.

Sources for the information below are listed at the bottom of this page and throughout this site.

I hope you enjoy this site.

I compiled this disc from the bonus tracks on the Camel, Mirage and The Snow Goose remastered cds, as well as the 2002 re-issue of A Live Record.  The track order is just my guess at how the songs may have been played, based on other recordings from this time period.

There was some confusion (probably only on my part) whether the date of the Marquee show was Oct 29 or 30 or both.  Thanks to my friend Andrew Skeoch, this is now resolved. Oct 29 is the true date.  Camel did not play at the Marquee on Oct 30.  Here is an advertisementfor shows at the Marquee shows during this period given to me by Andrew.

According to the remastered A Live Record, this is the date of the Marquee gig, not Oct-29

As I know of several shows in late 74 - early 75 period that Camel supported Wishbone Ash, I am starting to think that Camel may have played with them throughout this tour.  IF that were true, here is a listing of the entire tour  (continued in the 1975 section):

74-Dec-6:      The Auditorium - Milwaukee, WI         (w/  Wishbone Ash, Foghat)

74-Dec-31:    Academy Of Music - New York, NY         (w/  Carmen + Blue Oyster Cult)

According to the Blue Oyster Cult site, this gig happened and Camel was part of it. Steven Cordova was at this show, confirming that it happened. Carmen played first, then Camel, w/ Blue Oyster Cult being the headliners. This brings into question as to whether Camel opened for all of Wishbone Ash's shows during the above tour. If anyone has any info that could clarify this, please contact me.

75-Jan-2:    Civic Centre - Baltimore, MD         (Camel + Ted Nugent opened for Wishbone Ash)

"I saw Camel on a triple bill at the Civic Center in Baltimore, Md in 1974 or 1975.  I have been surfing websites for info per the Wishbone Ash site and I believe the correct date to be 75-Jan-2.  The concert was headlined by Wishbone Ash with Camel as the opening act and Ted Nugent as the second act.  The Camel set was very short - between 20 to 30 min.  There was a curfew in effect in the city at that time and the show had to end at 11pm.  I recognized two cuts from Mirage.  My friends and I really liked the Mirage LP, which was getting airplay on WKTK and I seem to recall hearing Lady Fantasy.  The remaining songs may have included something from the self-titled debut LP (I didn't own it or know the record)."     ~  Randy

75-Jan-5:    Hoffehit Pavillion - Dallas, TX         (Camel opened for Wishbone Ash)

** This show wins the incredibly annoying honor as THE Camel show w/ the most shifting dates.  I've heard people claim on a stack of bibles that the date should be June-23.  Then there are those who are touting w/ hand on heart "No, no, no, the date should be June-26".  At this point I'm done giving a rat's rear about the true date, unless someone has a ticket or poster for this show.  Just pick whichever date strikes your fancy and have fun w/ it.

Camel was scheduled to play but apparently did not, though I'm not sure why  -  it may have been due to Mel Collins recently joining the band and not being quite ready for a concert performance ?

    1977:

1977 (early):    Doug Ferguson leaves the band in early 1977

Q:   When did the sound change?

Latimer:   In the beginning we thought alike, we ate alike, we slept alike, we lived alike.  When Doug left, the spirit of the band was gone.  After him leaving, Camel never ever felt the same again.  It was like a family breaking up.

    1977 (sometime):    Richard Sinclair joins

While I can fully understand how important Doug Ferguson was to Camel and I don't mean any insult to him, as I'm sure he's a great guy, but musically Richard Sinclair was a great addition to Camel.  He was a very good singer, a much better bass player than Ferguson, and could sing and play bass remarkably well at the same time.  Never Let Go was just made for his voice and bass playing and never sounded as good after this tour.  The 1977 group was certainly Camel's most talented line-up.  It was also Camel's last tour with Peter Bardens.

Apparently 23 or so bands were scheduled (including Iron Butterfly, Quicksilver Messanger Service, Steppenwolf, The Byrds, Golden Earring), but when only 5 of the bands were to actually perform riots riots broke out and the stage burnt down, causing damage of more than a million marks and putting the festival on hold for years.

  • 77-Sept-22  ?:    Hammersmith Odeon - London, England         Evening Show

I don't think this listing is valid. On the Moondances DVD (filmed on the afternoon of 77-Sept-22 at the Hippodrome) the BBC Sight And Sound host mentions that Camel is playing another show that evening at the Hammersmith. I'm not sure if he is refering to the evening of 77-Sept-22 or the evening of the broadcast day, which I think was 77-Oct-1. As Camel's A Live Record lists their playing at the Hammersmith on 77-Oct-1 (source of Never Let Go), I think he was refering to the latter. In short, I don't think this is a valid date and that the true date is 77-Oct-1.

** I'm not completely certain this is the correct line-up for the early 1979 shows **

I do know for sure that Kit Watkins was not available at this point)

    79-Jan-13:    Koseinenkin Hall - Tokyo, Japan         2cd

This show may have never happened  -  the recording purporting to be from this date may be mislabeled

I originally had Soft Machine listed as playing with Camel for most shows in Jan + Feb 1979.  After some quick research, it appears that Soft Machine may not have played any shows in 1979.  Some of my info for listing them came from posters advertising the shows.  It could be that Soft Machine was originally scheduled to perform but may have backed out by then.  It appears that they did not perform live again until 1984.

79-Feb-7:    Ron Curtiss & Aaron Weiner interview Andrew Latimer + Andy Ward of Camel at 7pm at the Sunset Maruis Hotel

"We did not do the Boffomundo Show yet, so we got a writer from UCLA (where I attended briefly) to have it printed in the Daily Bruin. I just found the article and we are not mentioned, and the writer didn't assume that role, just delivered the facts from the interview. One interesting and historic thing happened: we asked (Latimer + Ward) if they had heard of Happy The Man, the awesome and totally underrated US prog band. They were signed to Arista as well and while they had never heard of them, we arranged for Arista to get them a copy. Next thing we read is that keyboardist Kit Watkins had joined Camel! Years later, we contacted Kit Watkins and he confirmed that he was found through 'two guys who interviewed band members and turned Andy Latimer on to HTM.' We were honored to have contributed to the history of a favourite band." ~ Ron Curtiss

79-March:    Dave Sinclair leaves Camel and Richard Sinclair is asked to leave. Mel Collins also appears to have stopped touring with Camel at this point (I think), though I know he continued to contribute to several of their future albums.

79-March/Apr:    Kit Watkins & Colin Bass join Camel  (arriving during rehearsals at Wood Farm - Suffolk, England in early 1979)

79-Apr-29:    Rotterdam, Netherlands         I'm not sure of the band line-up for this show  -  if anyone knows, please contact me

This is most likely a misdating of the 79-Nov show in Rotterdam
