I cannot find any evidence that Turning Point toured outside of 80-Oct, much less in 81-Dec. It appears as though Turning Point split up in late 1980. ** Peter Lemer's wife Jeff Clyne and Peter Lemer had previously played with Gilgamesh. Notes that came with this recording: Here's another with less than stellar sound, but very rare, and should be of great interest to Holdsworth fanatics. I'm not really sure about the history of this line-up, wheather it was an ongoing project or just a one-time only thing. What I do know is that Turning Point were a lesser-known British fusion band who recorded a couple of LP's in the 70's, here they are joined by Holdsworth and play a few of the tunes that would later surface on his first IOU album. Notes from Calyx: Jeff Clyne went on to form his own band, Turning Point, in early 1976 with his former Isotope bandmate, keyboardist Brian Miller. That band gigged intensively in the UK and released two albums before splitting up in late 1980. He is still active on the British jazz scene. ... In parallel to these 'rock' activites, Holdsworth also kept busy on the jazz scene : Sunbird (1980), another duet with Gordon Beck, led to a British tour in 1980 with Jeff Clyne (bass) and Gary Husband (drums). A little later, Holdsworth appeared with the same rhythm section as part of Turning Point at the Bracknell Festival, also touring Britain with them later in the year. Turning Point was a band led by ex-Isotope members Clyne and Brian Miller (keyboards), but Holdsworth was offered his own trio showcase during the gigs, with Clyne and Husband. Notes from Aymeric (aka urich21), who I think is a main contributer to Calyx (if not the main contributer): Based on the info I have, the likely date for this is October 6th 1980. This line-up debuted at the Bracknell Jazz Festival in July 1980, and that one-off was extended to a tour throughout October 1980, of which Cambridge was the second date. It is unclear whether the club's name is spelt "Carioca" or "Karaoke". ... Jeff Clyne: "[That final line-up] never recorded, which is a shame. What happened was that the personnel was pretty much the same [as before], except Dave Tidball went to the States, so we got Phil Todd, and Paul Robinson was busy doing something else, so Gary Husband came in on drums. I’d met Allan Holdsworth through other situations, doing some free music, with John Stevens and John Taylor... I approached the Arts Council about doing a tour. I sent a proposal, saying I’d like to do the same band, but with guest artists - so we had Neil Ardley on synthesizer and Allan Holdsworth on guitar. We did a tour with that group for the Arts Council. Unfortunately that wasn’t recorded. And there was a lot of material... At that time I wanted to get some work abroad with the band and couldn’t... We just seemed to go as far as we could. It was very frustrating. And I felt, 'That’s it, there’s no point'... Sort of lost a bit of interest. I felt very frustrated at not being able to push it any further. Also at that time I started playing the double bass again. So that was almost the end of an era [for me], with that sort of music...". Notes from neutron101 (via Dime post) I have a programme from this tour (having caught a 80-Oct-19 lunchtime show at the Strathallan Hotel - Birmingham, England) and the lineup is listed as: Neil Ardley Synth Jeff Clyne Bass Allan Holdsworth Guitar Gary Husband Drums Pepi Lemer Vocals Brian Miller Keyboards Phil Todd Sax
