I did not normalize any of the tracks -- just removed gaps and smoothed some transitions -- many of which apparently appeared on the original boot. Please be aware that, because of the age, some of these historic recordings do not meet today's standard's for recording quality and/or lack of background noise. Though, given the era, these are not bad. Below are some comments I located from a Joni expert. Note that his copy was on tape and the sequence was slightly different: And along that line, I will expand on the tape I've had in heavy rotation the past week called "Joni Mitchell - Looking Out For Love". It's really blown me away: The FIRST section is a Troubadour show from 69-Nov-30 [My comment: almost certainly the wrong date]. The set list: * Chelsea Morning * Cactus Tree * Rainy Night House > * Blue Boy > * Willy > * Looking Out For Love (she plays this as a four-song suite with a long piano intro, she even hits a wrong note in Rainy Night House and laughs it off as it's a new song, so she says) * Both Sides Now * Night In The City * Nathan LaFraneer * The Gallery (here too, she errs, singing the wrong line, stopping, telling another story, and then doing it from the beginning...about a 6 minute version of Gallery...) The SECOND section (labeled Folklore Broadcast probably 1966) is more Second Fret stuff, but these sound like radio studio recordings...very clear, and in the case of Both Sides Now, Joni even says she just wrote it 3 days ago! Pretty Cool! The set list: * Both Sides Now * Circle Game (with some nice harmony vocals thrown in by somebody, I can't recall who although it is mentioned) (Lou adds: Leonda?) * Just Like Me (Again, sadly, not the entire song, it picks up sometime after the intro) * Eastern Rain (really pretty guitar work on this one and she talks about it a little) * Blue On Blue (another unreleased Joni song, not the Bobby Vinton tune! :~)) The THIRD section sounds like it was recorded live at an outside cafe. Occasionally you can hear a car horn, passing traffic, all the notes say is "Philadelphia 1967". The set list: * Gift Of The Magi (yet another unreleased Joni song, may be her most "morbid Christmas song ever) * Melody In Your Name (Here again, she starts in too low a key, calls the song "you little beast", retunes, starts it again, alas, we don't get ALL of it but the ending gets cut out. * Dr Junk The Dentist Man (she tells a story about the North Carolina man the song is based on, it's kind of a Bo Diddley guitar song, pretty funny and light-hearted) . . . it's a great disc and the only recording of "Melody" that I've ever heard, therefore very worthwhile. Plus the song (if it's indeed a standalone song) "Looking Out For Love". And enjoyable quality throughout. Lou's Notes: A few notes on the bootleg dates: Regarding 11-30-69 Troubadour: Joni played the Troubadour in West Hollywood twice in 1969, a 6 day stint from 69-Jan 21-26, 2 shows a night, and a 6 day stint from 69-May 20-25. She played the Tom Jones TV Show broadcast sometime in November 1969, so maybe that part of the bootleg is from there? She did play Cal State Fullerton on 69-Nov-22 but spent most of November and December playing in Mass., NY, CT. She played 2 shows in Worcester on 69-Nov-29, afternoon at Alden Memorial Auditorium and evening at Holy Cross(?). This was Thanksgiving weekend Saturday. There is no record of a show on 69-Nov-30, Thanksgiving weekend Sunday. [My comment: Almost certainly not from Tom Jones TV Show - too long and no commentary from Tom Jones] Blue Boy, Willy, and Rainy Night House are on Ladies Of The Canyon (1970) so 1969 apperas to be the right time frame. Rainy Night House wasn't even titled yet! Regarding Folklore Probably 1966: She had 3 appearances in 1967 WHAT's The Folklore Program on Mar-12, Mar-19, and May-28, according to her website. She played a couple of times at the 2nd Fret in November of 1966, but other than the Newport Folk Festival, she spent most of 1966 playing in Detroit and Canada. No record of any Folklore appearances in 1966. On my 2nd Fret Sets bootleg, everything but Circle Game appears to be from: Tracks 12-15 recorded at W.H.A.T. Radio, Philadelphia, PA, 67-March-19. I don't know if they're the same versions, however, but that would be the Folklore program. The lyrics to Both Sides Now were copyrighted in 1967 and she does say it's a new song. The 3 unreleased songs have lyrics copyrighted in 1967 so one of the Folklore appearances in 1967 look right. Regarding Philadelphia 1967: Who knows? Other than the multiple 2nd Fret appearances and her 3 WHAT FM Folklore Show apperances, no other appearances are shown in Philly. I doubt if she would have been playing outside at the 2nd Fret. The lyrics to the 3 unreleased songs were copyrighted in 1966 and 1967, so the time frame looks right.
