1970-September Joni Mitchell Joni Mitchell Sings Joni Mitchell In Concert - BBC 2 (TV) London, England Disc 1 - 48.36 1 Chelsea Morning 3.02 2 Hunter 2.57 3 The Gallery 5.26 4 Cactus Tree 4.40 5 My Old Man (early version) 3.38 6 For Free 4.32 7 Woodstock 6.26 8 All I Want (early version) 5.19 9 California 5.08 10 Big Yellow Taxi 3.18 11 Both Sides Now 4.10 Broadcast Date may have been: 70-October-9 Since I wrote the below bit, I've seen others list this show as being from 70-Oct-9, which sounds plausable to me and was one possibility that I listed below. So, I'm going to go with that date. The odd thing if this were the date is the crowd's complete lack of response when she introduces Woodstock (plus the way she introduces it). Considering this was a somewhat big song for her (probably made moreso by CSNY), this is suprising. There is also a lack of response for For Free. This would tend to support an earlier date than the release date of Ladies Of The Canyon. I may never know. The below is my original thought process on the origin of this recording. Definitely NOT from the show that included James Taylor! I was told that it was from Royal Albert Hall in England, though I think it should be Royal Festival Hall, as I can find no evidence that she ever played at Royal Albert Hall. I think Royal Festival Hall is the same venue that the James Taylor show was recorded from, though I'm not sure. Anyway, the crowd sounds similar (I'm not saying they are the same performance, just that the acoustics of the Hall sound similar), so it could easily be from the same venue. In 1970, Joni played at the Royal Festival Hall on: 70-Jan-17 Royal Festival Hall London, England 70-Nov-20 Royal Festival Hall London, England 70-Nov-21 Royal Festival Hall London, England I was also told that it was a BBC recording, which would support a Royal Festival Hall venue. The crowd seems too large to be from the BBC's Paris Theatre. The recording is definitely soundboard, which would support a BBC production. However, Joni also performed this gig in 1970: 70-Oct-09 "In Concert" BBC 2 (TV) London, England Program Title: "Joni Mitchell Sings Joni Mitchell" I'm not sure if this was a filmed performance in the studio, which would not support this recording. I was also told that this was recorded in 1970. Given the set list, this is highly likely. Also, the crowd does not respond to For Free and Woodstock like they know it, but they obviously know Big Yellow Taxi. I cannot find the release date of the BYT single, though The Ladies Of The Canyon was released in April 1970. However, I don't know if the crowd's reaction can be used to determine a date. When Joni introduces Woodstock, she introduces the song, then says "It goes like this" which could possibly be an indication that the Ladies ablum was not yet released. If so, then the 70-Jan-17 date is a likely candidate. I do not think that 1971 is likely. Joni played only two shows in 1971 (that I know of); one was at a "Stop The War" protest and the other was as a guest at a Crosby/Nash show, so that pretty much rules out 1971. I don't think 1972 is even a possibility, so I won't discuss it. A late 1969 show could be a possibility.
